Avalanche Skills Training 1

The Avalanche Skills Training 1 (AST1) is offered to backcountry skiers, snowshoers and sledders seeking to enhance their safety when travelling in avalanche terrain. This two-day introduction to avalanche safety, will provide an entry-level decision-making framework based on the most advanced knowledge available. The course, given both in the classroom and in the field, meets the requirements of the Canadian Avalanche Association, and applies to people with basic training and little experience.

This course covers:

• Basics of avalanche formation and release

• Identifying avalanche terrain

• Planning and carrying out a trip in avalanche terrain

• Understanding the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) and the use of the Avaluator as a decision-making tool

• Understanding the Avalanche Bulletin

• Safe travel practices in avalanche terrain

• Carrying out companion rescue

• Understanding the limits of this training
